WHY WATER-BASED?
The South African market is dominated by solvent based products such as urea formaldehyde and
nitrocellulose reaction lacquers and waterbased coatings have a very small market share, but they are
certain to develop considerably in the near future. Great attention is being paid to waterbased products
as a solution to the environmental problems and health risks posed by the current solvent based
products. The main reason attributing to the slow growth in market share of waterbased products is
about drying times being longer than those of solvent based; to higher costs and difficult surface
preparation. But with the increase rate of technology, many of the above mentioned problems can be
overcome with the correct understanding and know-how.
